Because cold chisels are used to form metal, they have a less-acute angle to the sharp portion of the blade than a woodworking chisel.

Remember that chiseling with the grain can sometimes have disastrous results. If the grain runs deeper into the wood, it’ll direct the chisel too deep. Stop and chisel from the opposite direction if you feel this happening.

Some safety tips to know when using a wood chisel.

   1. Wear safety glasses, or goggles, or a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles).
  2.  Use the right size of chisel for the job.
  3. Choose smooth, rectangular handles that have no sharp edges and are attached firmly to the chisel.

A chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its end, for carving or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal by hand, struck with a mallet, or mechanical power.

You can use two kinds of aluminum-oxide wheels to sharpen your chisels; one is blue-gray and the other white. Used the darker-color wheel, which is harder and will keep its shape longer. The drawback, however, is that it grinds hotter than the softer, white wheel. Too much heat will weaken the steel. The soft wheel will need more frequent shaping with a dressing tool, but you’ll be less likely to burn the edge of your chisel while grinding. For best results, use a 100-grit wheel to shape your chisel blades.

Chisel tools are used in a wide range of applications. Many types of chisels have been developed, and each is suited to its intended use. Chisels are made differently according to their different types and uses. The length or width of the blade; the hardness and shape of the blade, and the type of handles and materials used, are some of the various factors that can make one type of a chisel different from the other.
